Biology Quick Start Guide

1. Article Literature

Biology articles are indexed in several library resources. Medical articles specifically are indexed in MEDLINE/PubMed

2. Background Information

Background information on Biology and the sciences can be found in Gale Virtual Reference Library and Encyclopedia Britannica. These two resources are good for getting you a quick grounding on a topic. They will also give you some recommendations for further reading.

3. Statistical Information

Statistical Information on Biology, public health and the sciences is often available on the web through government data clearinghouses such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Library of Medicine (NLM), or the various agencies that have technical missions at the local, state, and federal levels. A list of such institutions can be found on our websites for Biology tab.

Also, most peer-reviewed research studies will have a section of their paper dedicated to the statistics they generated in their study. Many databases break these charts and graphs out as individual image files that can be used in presentations.

4. Physical Collection

The books on the sciences have call numbers between 500-599. Biology specifically is from 570-599 and includes plants and animals. If you are looking for inspiration, go to that section and browse.

Books on Science and Religion will be classified in the 200's if they use religious or philosophical methods to discuss science. If they use scientific method to explore religion then they will be classed in the 500's.
